completed as part of my 24hr readathon, RTC!

This book touches on multiple themes which spark debate and allows for different interpretations of the same topics, which in my opinion is one of the defining properties of a good book. The writing style is beautiful, each word dipped in pain and longing like honey.
The worldbulding doesn't quite sit right with me, angels doing things that were made by men, and using their tongue long before it were invented, etc.
It was a good book to read. During certaion scenes, my mind kept drifting back to the movie Spotlight(2015), thinking about how many Lucifers there had been, how many gods.

  • i thought the book would have a bigger emotional impact on me, with its central theme and all
  • im not a big fan of the writing style tbh. i thought it was pretty at first, but i didn't enjoy reading it towards the end
  • i love how the angels are discouraged - or even forbade - from desire and how they are punished for it. the
final scene of the remaining angels being punished and being second to man was heartbreaking
. tickles the religious guilt in my brain yk
  • i did enjoy part one and the early chapters of part 2. i do think it is one of  few(?) modern retellings that really draws from existing source material and understanding the characters as such. in contrast to loosely based franchises centering angels i.e. supernatural
  • i recall coming across one of nicolas's tumblr posts, that lucifer was not really written to be a good person. i loved how complex he is, naive and ashamed but also self-centred and violent. his downward spiral felt so personal, as if i was actually seeing a friend go through it.
  • also really love the story touching on theological roots of goodness, obedience and the creation of sin
  • i really liked michael's and lucifer's final battle/confrontation!

Oh, to have been God’s favorite, to have created sin, to have love, lost, and fallen.

LOVED IT 😭😭

“But maybe it was too late, even now, to save Lucifer; too early, before creation, it was too late.”

I really don’t know how to put all my thoughts about this book in a coherent review. Unlike me, the author has a way with words that makes me absolutely feral. I READ IT ALL ON MY PHONE AND I HAVE 189 HIGHLIGHTS AND NOTES. One of my notes read: BITING ALL SOLID SURFACES.

So of course i have more than a hundred favorite parts but I wanted to write about how much of a masterpiece chapter 28 is. It’s written like a tennis match between two scenes, something I haven’t seen in a single book chapter before. One is Uriel on his walk with God and thinking about the past, and the other is Lucifer going on about his day, getting more aware and enraged. The descriptions, the story, the feelings, the scenery, everything was perfect and yes Uri-Kimah has ruined me forever. Simply, because I can’t put it in another form, it was amazing.

Overall, if you dabble in blasphemy, pick this book up <3
