I couldn’t put this book down. I loved the mythological stories in a modern writing style. I barely remember Circe from when I read the odyssey in high school, many many years ago. Even so, I quickly grew attached to her story and her growth. The challenges and pains she endured. And the ending had me in tears! Absolutely amazing book.

At some parts I felt like the pacing was weird, but such is the life of an immortal I guess. Overall very emotional, and I loved seeing the growth of the main character throughout the book. I also love how Madeline Miller characterizes the gods as typically cruel and selfish beings, as well as the complicated portrayal of Odysseus. I didn't find the feminist themes "virtue-signal"y or cringey, but pretty matter-of-fact.

It was a slowish start but it grew into a great book and I found the ending pleasantly surprising.

I grew up reading stories like the Odyssey and I thought I knew Circe but Madeline Miller expands on the character in such a way that I didn't think possible. This book was a wonderful read. I couldn't put it down. From the way that Circe describes witchcraft and her interactions with several characters of myth is just amazing.

Beautifully written, equal parts brutal and empowering in its epic sweep of a life across a thousand years.  Occasionally bogged down in dark tensions, or whisked along by a revolving door of side characters that Miller usually succeeds in making relevant.  Ends on hopeful, inspiring notes as a testament to humanity, love, and mortality.
