You had me at witchcraft and libraries. This was spooky and horrifying and so full of dark academia vibes and books I could literally smell old books and fresh ink all the way through. I loved every second, and I fell in love with both Tess and Eliot. They were great characters who were polar opposites of each other, and yet they fit together like two jigsaw pieces.
The story was unpredictable, intriguing and mysterious. It was also way darker than I thought it would be. It was well paced out and had a nice flow throughout. It was twisty and often made me question what was real and what wasnt.
The romance was well placed out, giving us time to love and appreciate our protagonists as individuals first, which I really appreciated.
The atmosphere throughout was more horrifying than spooky. There was always an eerieness that saturated the story, even when you could put your finger on it. Highly reccomend this to anyone who loved Dark Academia or is looking for a horror read full of murder, witchcraft and handsome British boys.

The marketing for this book was almost everything I could've asked for: enemies to lovers, dark academia, ghosts and demons but it didn't deliver anything to make me care about the characters or plot. I was not convinced by the romance, it was very insta lovey and made me cringe more often than I could count. The dialogue and monologues felt very repetitive, melodramatic and on the low end of YA which isn't what I was expecting going in.
I was hoping for more worldbuilding especially on the witch aspects ( are there more of them , are there administrations to control them? etc) but nothing was explained and Eliot's magic almost seemed useless. This leads me to the point that The Devil Makes Three suffers a lot from a pacing issue. It takes 40% for things to start getting somewhere and even then it dragged. Additionally,certain resolutions were just too simple considering the things they had to go through.
I was hooked on the idea of a horror novel set in a boarding school and therefore, expected the book to focus on the horror aspects. However, the romance overshadowed this to the point that even the Devil/ Truth character seemed underdeveloped and rather childish. I suppose this is my time to stop expecting too much from YA horror.
Overall, It's a shame I didn't end up enjoying The Devil Makes Three as much as I'd hoped. The only thing I liked was the open-ended epilogue and that's about it.

Set in a prep school library over the summer, this book immaculate dark academia vibes. The library is eerie and full of locked-up old books. This was a perfect fall read without being actually scary.
Both of the main characters are interesting, flawed, and dealing with a lot.
It likely would have been better as a NA or adult title, since the horror was capped at a PG-13 level. However, the writing was so vivid that I totally imagined it (especially the Tess sections) like a movie. So maybe this will be a great entry point: babies' first horror.
