This book is set in the Napoleonic wars in Spain and follows the fate of a young soldier John Lacroix recovering from battle with a secret about what happened in a Spanish village. He is warned by a fellow officer that the army are coming to get him back to fight again so he takes off to Scotland.

This is quite a slow moving tale but very enjoyable. The descriptions of the places and the historical detail are excellent. I loved the growing relationship between John and Emily who he meets in the Hebrides.

This has been a 'pick it up put it down' book to try and get out a reading slump, and it was pretty good. I wanted to read something regency that wasn't Austen or a Mills and Boon, and it delivered.

I did enjoy the journey but I felt it was quite slow and stilted in some parts, the flip-flopping between characters as one set pursues the other was a bit confusing at times - there was an allusion to a real life event but I didn't know what it was and I didn't care enough to Google it.

It was nice to visit some Regency-era Scotland for a change!!

A beautifully written book which was a joy to read. The author’s attention to historical detail amazes. The story emerges through a series of beautifully depicted cameos traversed by his main characters. One chapter describes the exploits of his hero and the next deals with the adventures of the adversaries who pursue him.
And so on etc. Right up to the denouement which is carried off handsomely. I really look forward to reading more of Miller’s work in the future.

A compelling story which is carried along with the poetic language and rhythm, which is maintained throughout. A rounded up 3.5, taking into account that some additional editing would not have gone amiss, by the end I was absolutely enthralled.

I read Pure when it won the Costa and loved it - when I first saw this it didn’t appeal at all - a military man trying to find himself after a war, not really my bag. But shiiiiiiit this is good. Andrew Miller is a fantastic storyteller, oh my goodness. An eerie cat-and-mouse thriller too. Highly recommend if you want to get lost in a good (really f***ing good) story.

I enjoyed this suspenseful historical novel of the atrocities of war. A man seeking to forget his past learns he is being hunted. A story of love and redemption set during the Napoleanic wars.
