3.5 - 4 stars. The rich world building of this book made it for me, I loved the different religions, superstitions and cultures woven throughout. I 've never really given ghosts much thought but the traditions this fantasy builds upon are fascinating. The plot was well paced, my only hesitation is that the romances feel a bit 2D and teen lust but then given Li Lan's inexperience I didnt think thay was unfair or unrealistic. I'd happily read another book set in this world!

Adding to my favorites, this is so much more than I expected it to be and I got a bunch of history (50 percent folklore) to boot! It was dense with cultural explanations at first but after that unexpected separation between parts 1 and 2 of the book, I absolutely could not put it down. On top of rich descriptions of the Chinese culture, traditions, and a deliciously detailed setting of Malaysia during a time of cultural and religious exchange, you get a ghost story that is so surreal and still quite tangible. I can't say anymore without spoiling it, but risk this: if you feel yourself falling for the unexpected, just jump into its warm embrace, you will not regret it!!!

Read this as part of the 2016 Read Harder challenge. On the whole I really enjoyed it, but there was a large part of the middle third that I felt could have been shortened without any loss to the overall story. Really liked the ending, would love to know the next part of the tale

She writes it all so beautifully. Listening to the audio is so pleasant, she reads it all so smoothly.

And of course the plot and characters were wonderful as well.

The lore, landscape, and characters had me enchanted. I woke up thinking about how sweet it all was.
