Powerful and timely, but also more blunt and direct than I am used to with poetry.

What an incredible book of poetry. Written after the events of October 7, 2023, Palestinian poet Yaffa gives us a look into how it feels to be both trans and Palestinian during the genoc*de. There is so much emotion here. Sadness, longing for a home you can’t return to, guilt, anger, fear, but also hope. While this book of poetry is technically short, it is by no means an easy read. I walked away feeling devastated, and even more angry about what is going on. Everyone should read this, and continue fighting back.
Free Palestine.

“If there’s no one to count the dead do they not count”
“If joy is revolutionary how much ecstasy do I need to free Palestine”
“If I was not trans would Palestine be free? No, then now fucking dare you bring it up instead of saying Free Palestine”
“You drew a line when you said you didn’t have to tolerate queer and trans people; you drew a line when you said a settler colony state is valid in defending itself leading to a genocide … you’ve drawn every line there could be while we wait for a circle”
“We are not meant to be ok when genocide is our neighbor funded by our labor”
“Being in the diaspora means wondering which cut from your paycheck killed your cousin”

Honestly, I have never been much interested in poetry as it isn't a style that resonates with me. That's why I didn't know this was a book of poems when I requested it from my library—I had just seen it on a list of Palestinian books and put a hold on it. However, I really enjoyed reading and engaging with the poems in this collection. I stop a few times to reread some, and it's always nice to see things that are presented as complex ideas or histories be presented so concisely and intentionally. My favorite poems were: Diaspora, I Am, At Odds, Lines and Circles, Standing, Trans in Palestine, Questions in the Desert during an Eclipse, Count, and Land back.
