Kicking off spooky season/autumn with this wonderfully macabre collection of short stories.
I’m not usually one for short story collections - I get too invested in a character/plot and want more.
However, I loved Armfield’s writing - her words find a way to bury themselves under your skin. It’s beautiful and dark *insert Claire from Fleabag describing Finland in S2E1 here*. Definitely one I will re-read.
Reading this while on holiday in Cornwall, with the sea air, felt like kismet.
Favourite lines:
The Collectables - “you’re just not the sum of your parts”
just casually getting me to think if Mary Shelley would be proud
Stop your women’s ears with wax - “We just want fans who follow us.”
it gave me ‘Butter’ by Asako Yuzuki vibes
Cassandra After - “… I couldn’t talk to her just yet; I was sweeping the bones of a girl I loved off the kitchen floor.”
this - I think my heart cracked a little bit, thanks Julia

Absolute stone cold banger. Gross, haunting, creepy. Occasionally it feels repetitive - there are certain phrases, occurrences that the author loves. But I still loved it.

Took me a while to get into the individual stories, but I really liked the last two and ended up liking the collection as a whole more than I expected!

I think Julia Armfield might just be one of my favourite authors at the moment. Fell in love with ‘out wives under the sea’ and salt slow was just as weird, creepy, mysterious and wonderful
