This is a fantastic book. While it is often heavy and hard topics, it is well done. I'm glad I read it and will read the sequel.

Oh my I really enjoyed this book. Just exactly my cup of tea. So many trigger/content warnings are needed and I am very glad I got one of them before getting to that part of the book so look them up if you are at all sensitive. I really enjoyed the way my theories and ideas kept being subverted without it being unearned. Things that seemed out of place did turn out to be relevant even if not in the ways I thought. It’s also clear how much research the author did about Yale and the societies (although she did go to Yale so maybe she has more firsthand experience than she is letting on 😁) but I have to admit the details about where things are and the architecture were somewhat lost on me. I’ve been avoiding the author a bit because sometimes very popular authors are not my cup of tea but I’m sold on her. I am definitely going to be reading everything by her now.

There is one main scene with a sexual assault involving a 12 year old child. It is pretty graphic but not very long. The scene is also remembered later in somewhat vivid terms. There is also a video of another sexual assault where a college woman is drugged and she performs a sex act. It’s not described in detail but it could be triggering. Also the rituals performed by some of the houses are kind of medical trauma and body horror-esque. If you’re squeamish it might be a lot. There is also some body possession content and some of it is of dubious consent (or no consent). It’s not entirely played as a metaphor for sexual assault but it may be triggering for some.

The world was a bit confusing at first but I loved the concept. There were so many twists and turns and I wanted to just keep reading. The way the plot unfolds and how the larger forces at play are revealed definitely have me interested in the next book. Alex feels very well thought out and real and her character development was so interesting to read. Definitely recommend!
