I only knocked off half a star because there were some parts of the dialogue that made me CRINGE a little, but I think it fit the characters well enough.

After reading through the reviews, it feels like people's biggest gripe about this book is the length/pace... my opinion is that if you don't like a slow burn, where the pieces of the puzzle inch closer, and closer until there's a clear picture... you probably won't enjoy this book that much. I really enjoyed the pace, I liked developing my own theories as new information popped up, and I loved being WRONG. There was so much revenge that made me go, "FUCK YES!" So many gratifying moments... I'm so excited to dive right into the second book. šŸ¤©

I was HOOKED on this book!

Please do read the trigger warnings for this book thereā€™s some heavy themes in it!

To be fully transparent it took me 3 attempts to start this book. I donā€™t think I was in the correct head space to read it the first few times but once I was ready OH BOY I was ready. The premise of this book was so interesting to me! Secret societies mixed with the supernatural is a great combination and I loved Alex as a protagonist! She was competant and different and I found that really appealing and refreshing to read.

Darlington you own my heart I love you

The reason itā€™s a 4 stars is the choice of language used to describe POC knowing a white woman has written this made me uncomfortable. Mongrel? HATED that! Iā€™m a biracial woman and it gave me shivers and goosebumps to read that! I donā€™t really understand the urge white authors have to write about POC experiences when itā€™s actually just unessacary? Would the plot work without that? Yes! You did that for what? I donā€™t personally think it felt like a prominent issue and I could get past it and enjoy the book for what it was but would understand discomfort for POC.

I hope in book two this improves and we also get more of my bby Darlington!!!

A delicious combination of occult magic, dark academia, foreboding, and social commentary.

Alex (Galaxy) is yet another example of Bardugoā€™s crafted flawed protagonist; a former high school drop out drug addict who is provided a chance to join Lethe, secret society at Yale. Their purpose is the monitor the other magical secret societies but when a girl turns up dead, Alex is convinced something is off.

It is unapologetically dark and graphic at times. A blend of horror & dark adult fantasy.

The time line was a bit confusing when listening via audiobook but I otherwise really enjoyed this and cannot wait for the sequel Hell Bent šŸ˜ˆ

In my opinion, the second half was much better then the first one. I fell in love with the characters in the second half; Darlington, North, Alex, Dawes. Canā€™t wait to see them in Hell Bent.

The pacing was a bit slow at first so be warned that for the first like 150-200 pages, itā€™s slow

I also didnā€™t have a problem with her writing here as I did with her ya series (shadow and bone and Six of Crows)
