Such a great plot. So devious, so cunning, so expertly woven. But dark and forboding and downright scary at times. Excellent reading, great characterization. The disintegration of a psyche and the renewed strength of character for good and for evil is incredibly well drawn. Can't wait to read the 3rd. And might re-read the first.

2.5. this one didn't grip me as much as the first...fell into a lot of the pitfalls of a second in a trilogy. the last 30% or so was fast-paced and excellent, but too much setup when the first book should have accomplished that already. will probably read the third, but won't be rushing for it.

Arc through Penguin's First to Read program.

I admit I made the mistake of not realizing it was book 2 of a series, so with that in mind... The book was decent enough for a thriller. The characters and everything going on was a bit much to keep up with, but it did keep you guessing. I would recommend it if you want a different change of pace from all the "in" books. BUT READ THE FIRST ONE FIRST, lol. :)

I received this book free from LibraryThing.com I enjoyed reading this book. It is book 2 in a trilogy. The plot elements from book 1 were explained well enough that I could read it without being confused. There are some plot lines left unresolved at the end of the book, presumably for book3. The plot in this thriller concerns the rivalry between two criminal gangs in Europe, 1 in Sweden, and 1 in Germany with a third gang in Colombia, alternately cooperating with either of the two, for its own ends. Sophie Brinkmann is a nurse who gave up her nursing job to work for the Swedish gang after falling in love with its head, Hector Guzman. The translation was very good.

I read and enjoyed the first book in this trilogy - but I had a bit of a hard time keeping up with this book. The alliances and feuds between the various characters are very hard to keep track of and I found myself rooting against everyone - villains and police alike.

I found myself putting this down more often and being more reluctant to pick it up - though I enjoyed reading it each time I did - just not in the way I'd enjoyed teh first book.

This is a thrilling, fast paced story that you won't be able to put down. It has a million twist and turns that will have you hanging on for dear life! The author is a master at story telling, and creating thrilling drama. Because this is a review book, but the plot elements from book 1 were explained well enough that I could read it without being confused. Which was great.

This is an international organized crime, drug smuggling, weapons running, corrupt cops, and a single-mother just wanting her life back to normal story which is one of my favorites.

The only downside is that I love a book where there is a protagonist whom I can identify with. I'm sure in this case there wasn't one.

I got this book free as a review copy.

I didn't know it was part of a trilogy until I started reading it. It's highly recommended that you read the first book before starting this one. I didn't and some of it was a bit difficult to follow but in the end, enough of the first book was explained that I was able to understand this one.

Basically, it's a book on gang warfare where gangs and trying to kill off each other and taking their business. The book has quite a big international stage with locales in Germany, Sweden and Columbia. I was a bit surprised at how few gang members that each gang had, I thought the organizations would be bigger. The main story is in Sweden but moves around a bit. There is quite a bit of violence.

It took me a while to get into the book because I didn't know the series characters but in the end I liked the book. I liked the book because the author invested in the characters and made them interesting. In this second book, the main characters are actually 3 members of the Swedish police and he author devotes a lot of time on them. He writes about their personal lives, what makes them tick and generally makes them come alive. I thought the characters were fascinating and made the book for me. Miles was lost and seemingly hated his life until this case was thrown into his lap and his newly found love was beaten. Tommy was a good cop until he lost his purpose in life and turned to the dark side. These two were probably the two strongest written characters in the book.

At the end, it seems that the main story just moves a little bit. Some people are killed and the main locale is moved. I guess we must read the last book to find out what happens.

Overall, I would say that this book must be read as part of the trilogy. There was a lot of action and the writing moved at a moderate pace. I liked the characters and I would definitely read the first and last book.

Sophie Brinkmann has taken on a role in a crime family that she never wanted. After the head of the family was murdered and his son--her connection to the family--is left in a coma, people look to her more than she expected. And not only does she not feel entirely cut out for this type of work, but she still has some moral issues with the operation. Rival families are closing in, however, and they've made it clear they will take what they want if they have to. And when they start to make good on that threat, Sophie knows she's going to have to act on her own if she wants to make it out alive--and her son along with her.

There's a lot of plotting and action in this book. So many groups and parties are moving against each other, sometimes with knowledge of the others and sometimes with people being caught completely unaware. But with so much going on and so many characters, it was confusing at times for me to really keep track of what was going on, how each person fit into the story, and where things were headed. It was an intriguing story, but difficult to follow at times, to be sure.

This is the second book in a trilogy (the third book is yet to be released), but I had no problems following the story. The reliance on the events of the first book is light, and what readers need to know is referenced with enough detail for it all to make sense.

The Other Son was an interesting suspenseful read.

To begin with, read the first book. I read this book being totally confused and having no idea what was going on in the past. It is definitely not a book you can read without reading the rest of the series.

Now for the dirt:

This book is very exciting, if you know what is going on with the story. The chapters filter through the different characters and their different dramatic situations. Eventually all the stories connect and everything that happens within the novel makes sense.

I do feel like this book was a little to long. It felt like it dragged on and on and I got bored several times. I had to put this book down for weeks before I could pick it back up, but that is simply because the author writes in a way that doesn't connect to me personally. The story wasn't super fast (which is what I like in a book) so it was hard for me to read. It is still a great book though!

There is enough action and mystery to keep readers who like those types of novel happy. It is definitely a book I'd suggest to readers who like thrillers.

Overall - I found the book was to long, some of the parts could have been removed and the story would have worked just as well. I also felt like the author could have made the book work as a stand alone in case people picked it up, but instead I was mega confused.

Three out of five stars.
