The Lost Girls of Ireland by Susanne O'Leary

My first Suzanne O'Leary and the first book in a new series and, my goodness, what an opener! I loved it. Finding out your late husband had been committing fraud and money laundering, leaving her with very little money, Lydia had no idea what she was going to do. Luckily, her solicitor remembered that her Great Aunt had left her a property a few hundred miles away. Would this just be a short term solution and she's be able to move back to Dublin and her old life?

Audiobook. A small village on the coast of Ireland Ireland? I am in. Reminiscent of Jenny Colgan. A husband who is not what he seems to be, relatable. At times Lydia felt snobbish. Loved the backstory of the aunt. What is the ending predictable? Yes. Overall, entertaining.

This was a quaint, quiet, quick read. Everything is very even keeled, from the characters to the plot. Even the more dramatic parts seem too smooth, like the book has been injected with Botox - there are no frowns or laugh lines, but it lacks the personality and interest that come from the ups and downs of life.
I didn’t love it or hate it. It was just filler fluff, originally intended to try to reach my 2022 reading goal, but now will get me started on 2023. Taking a star off for the lack of emotion in this book and a star off for lackluster writing and editing efforts. So many conversations where the exact same thing was said three different ways.

Not really getting the appeal of O'Leary here. Maybe it's because I started in the middle of one of her series, but honestly it just felt like a very slow moving romantic story. There was so much potential for the main characters to show themselves as a strong female character, yet they were reduced to a man-chasing, love-wanting trope. I like stronger characters in my novels.
