I found the first three quarters of this book held my attention much more than The Lost Heir, however, when it came to the
the competition for the throne,
it lost me. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy seeing that part of the Rainwings culture and how they differ from the other tribes. That epilogue though, perfect way to set up Starflight being the narrator for The Dark Secret.

While I enjoyed this book a tab bit less than the others due to Starflight being an annoying shit, its still a really good book, the plot didn’t drop off, the chapters are still unique and wonderful and I would say this series is still holding up.

5 stars. The Hidden Kingdom was really good, and it’s tied as my favorite with The Lost Heir. Glory’s point of view was really nice to read, and I’m glad that she became the queen. My favorite characters are Glory and Tsunami, but Kinkajou was also a cool character. My favorite part was when they use the tunnel and talk with Blaze. The part that surprised me the most was at the end when Clay repeats that Starflight is missing.

Following along with Glory this time around, your enjoyment of the book will largely depend on your tolerance for the protagonist's attitude rather than anything related to the story. The story, when addressed on its own, is fairly engaging and has a decent mystery that doesn't ever match up to the suspense of the previous. There's a small romantic subplot that's the best of any seen so far, but it doesn't conclude in any way, just like the rest of the plot. Do not expect a satisfying ending. The other two books may have fed into an overarching adventure, but they still felt relatively self-contained, with the important characters starting and finishing personal arcs and ending smaller narratives. Here, while Glory does get some character development, no part of the story is concluded and the ending is dissatisfying.

The cast ventures into the rainforest and the RainWings are, at least currently, my favorite tribe. Their kingdom is beautiful and the dragons within it are pleasant and eccentric. New characters are introduced with fun personalities that contrast against Glory's sour and gloomy demeanor. Her friends are given better use than they were in The Lost Heir and it's refreshing to not see Glory be a horrible person to them at all times. The cultural norms of the RainWings require there to be less violence than normal and some fans may find the peaceful conflicts uninteresting. That isn't to say there isn't any bloodshed.

Glory herself is either a compelling and complicated protagonist struggling with severe internalized racism that she steadily grows out of, or she's an overly cynical and cruel bully of a girl who seeks to put down everyone around her to feel better about herself. The racism is constant and without any grace. Her resentment of her own tribe, while interesting, can be overwhelmingly bitter and make her difficult to root for. It doesn't help matters that she ultimately
saves the day via a contrivance rather than through real skill or merit.
This book ends with a plot twist that causes
Glory to be handed a victory on a silver platter.
It's underwhelming.

Dragon society remains intriguing and the exploration of the world tickles the brain. It's a fun time with tension and humor, but it's my least favorite of the three books so far.
