4.5 rounded up because this was such a nice pallet cleanser and a fresh, nuanced, unique perspective on the commodification of women’s’ bodies/beauty industry and standards. the audiobook also has my single most favorite feature in any (nonfiction) audiobook: the author’s voice cracking, clearly holding back a sob as they read an emotional part….IT ALWAYS GETS ME

i’m not even sure this book was really that good but i just love emily’s narrative voice and ate this book up far more than i expected. simple yet memorable

while we certainly see a lot of models and their beauty, we don’t hear from them so often. these well-written essays that i wouldn’t say are ground-breaking, but definitely informative and occasionally harrowing give a voice to someone mostly seen as an object. i agree with rata - why wouldn’t she use her insane beauty for a stable career? it is a rational decision that she quickly learns has pitfalls, but she has stuck with nonetheless. none of us love every part of our job, but if you’re good at it and the money flows, why not stay? i like that rata discloses in the intro that this is not definitive answers or stances to her life’s questions and morals, and it’s clear throughout the book that she is still growing and learning. i hope she gets to go back to school like she mentioned to the (one of many) creepy photographer and keeps writing.

quick read as well that helped me out of a slump(:

this book is a set of essays that are phenomenally written and brilliantly arranged. i knew nothing about the author before reading, and now i fiercely wish she were more recognized for her writing. i’ll probably reread this over time. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My crush endures.
