Better than the first book.
Less focus on sex, more dragons.

My attention span struggled at times, but the last 25% was a ride!

Was this a five star book? Pretty close. Could I put this book down for a second? No. Did Violet drive me insane? Yes. I know she went through some major trauma at the end of the first book, but she took a big step back emotionally. She was very immature, annoying and petty through the majority of the book. It was incredibly frustrating to read her this way when she was so forceful and strong in the first book. The constant back and forth, push and pull, between Violet and Xaden was very repetitive too throughout the book. Though there were some pretty spicy scenes mixed in, which is always fun. The plot is also much slower paced in this book. A lot seems to be happening, but at the same time not much happens at all. There was a lot of learning, researching, figuring out battle plans, practicing magic, etc. A lot of information dumping that got to be a bit much at times. Overall, this book was still an enjoyable read. There were some pretty intense, heart pounding, WTF moments scattered throughout. And the whole ending happened so fast, was so emotional and left such a huge cliffhanger that I kept thinking about it for the next few days. While this book didn’t quite stack up to the first book, I still love the world this author has created and will definitely need to read the next book.

So what the hell did I just read? That was amazing. It kept me engaged just as much as the first book, and the character development of both Violet and Xaden was phenomenally done. The plot twists are never ending and well executed. It’s just genuinely so good.

Love doesn’t even have the decency to die. It just transforms into abject misery. That’s what this ache in my chest is: misery. Because love, at its root, is hope. Hope for tomorrow. Hope for what could be. Hope that the someone you’ve entrusted your everything to will cradle and protect it. And hope? That shit is harder to kill than a dragon.

I've reread this book and I just can't say it enough: This series is an absolute MASTERPIECE.
All the hidden Infos, the foreshadowing, hints you might not catch the first time reading. it's delicious !!!
It's my reread and I loved it even more than the first time reading it.
Also some people might say the relationship between Xaden and Vi gets a bit annoying. I can not agree less! Please remind yourself that there are some major secrets going on that both need to keep secret separately, they both are still young adults who are trying to figure out how to make this relationship work WITH all the stuff going on.
the whole Rebellion thing, Brennan Sorrengail being alive,  Xadens second signet being a inntinnsic which is a death sentence ! , the venin and wyverns that are real and are attacking, Andarnas Power etc.

It's a lot on their shoulders and while trying to save "the world" they are still human/ young adults that try to work things out between their relationship and their friends while trying to survive and stay alive.
This whole Story has so much character development. The things they need to go through in order to survive the upcoming war (be prepared), it's nothing you just get over with. It actually changes you. The struggles and working through all this shit just feels real to me. It's important to the story to empathize with the characters and understand actions/ feelings etc. Also it's needed for the upcoming plot. The PTSD, the anxiety, the loneliness throughout all of the shit that's happening. I feel like Rebecca Y. captured all of this perfectly. And everyone who thinks this book "could have been a e-mail" :
you need to start looking for all the little secret hints/ interpret und analyse. Start reading between the lines. I swear, my reread opened my eyes to so sooo many hints and foreshadowing. I can't imagine how long it must have taken R.Y to plot all of this so seamlessly !
Just read carefully and let your theories flow your mind. Do not just read it casually. You will miss out on A LOT !!

This book took me on an absolute whirlwind of a ride.  While I like the first book better, as this one had a distinctly darker view of the world, I enjoyed it tremendously.  I couldn't put it down in the last 100 pages, and my mind went on a horrifying ride in the last two chapters.  I need a moment to decompress after that.  No Spoilers.  But it was fun figuring out all the twists and turns or trying to guess at things before they happened.
