Iron Flame - Flammengeküsst by Rebecca Yarros

slow-paced

i’m gonna be honest here and say that this was not quite as good as fourth wing. don’t get me wrong… this book was very good, however, it also tended to drag on and i did find myself bored at times throughout this book.

i feel as though not much of consequence actually happened for a 623 page book, which is a little irritating. part one was especially slow and just frustrating in general to read. part two was most definitely better. this book just needs a little shortening.

there were some beautiful quotes about love in this book and i did highly enjoy that, but something just felt a little lackluster compared to the previous book.

all that being said, it was an enjoyable read but it just took me longer to finish than most books of the same length. that, in itself, tells me that there’s definitely something left to be desired. i will be reading onyx storm, but i am in no rush to do so.

I am so happy I waited until now to read this series because if I had to wait more than a few days to start the next book…. This book is just 😅😳🤯

I enjoyed this book better than the first of the series because of how action packed it was as well as just keeping you invested in the plot that was happening. The only reason I gave it a 4.25 is because once I reached the second part of the book, I felt like it was a good ending to the book itself + the author could have made the second part into another book, but that’s a picky judgment. But also, I mainly say this because there was just a lot going on in every chapter, so I had to take plenty of breaks in order to take in all the info I got. However, overall, a great sequel + an even better ending. This author knows how to leave her readers wanting more!!

This is much cringer than the fist. Wish she would have split it in two.

I'm enjoying this series, especially the dragons. The romance has me a bit conflicted as it is too possessive, for want of a better word, in a way that makes me uncomfortable. I likethe world and the contrast we get in this book with the riders as compared to the brutal world of school in the last book.

Would’ve appreciated if the entire book was like the last 200ish pages but alas. A solid second installation to The Empyrean series, although there were too many characters to keep track of and somehow not much happening despite everything happening. I do love Rebecca Yarros’ characterization, even with the minor characters, I just think there doesn’t need to be so many with actual names, you know? Makes it hard to keep track of the ones that are more necessary. If that makes sense? Idk this took me awhile to finish because some of the plot devices were a little too convoluted and didn’t seem to serve the plot in general. Inevitably, yes, more will be revealed in the third book. Also—if all of the steamy scenes are going to basically be the same, can we maybe chill on that aspect of the books because unfortunately I was growing bored with them, as much as I love Xaden.

Like I said with the first one, the world building in this series could be better. But I did like the introduction of more of life outside of Basgiath and Navarre. In any case, I enjoyed it and was very invested in the final quarter of the book. Quite the interesting cliffhanger!!

Not a bad second installment in the Empyrean series, though not nearly as captivating as Fourth Wing.

Yarros imbued Iron Flame with classic fantasy narration: magical creatures and characters fighting for a greater good. For the most part, I enjoyed the pace. As with Fourth Wing (and even with The Last Letter, despite everything else about it sucking), Yarros writes sexual tension incredibly well. The story itself was exciting, nerve wracking, and emotional. I found myself experiencing the full spectrum of human emotion throughout Iron Flame and the revelations in this book, combined with the cliff hanger Yarros left us with, have me excited for the next Empyrean installment.

While I enjoy descriptive writing, Yarros packed too many people and places to remember into the story, making it hard to focus on the actual plot at times. The excessive description also made the book too long. There were many exciting chapters, but there were also many where not much was happening. I think Yarros could have cut at least 100 pages out and left us with essentially the same story. Finally, the lack of trust between Violet and Xaden irritated me. I appreciate that they’re young and they eventually worked out how to communicate with one another, but it felt like an unnecessarily drawn out story line.

Yarros continues to impress me with her fantasy work. I recommend this one and I’m ready for the next Empyrean installment to come out in January!
