They have the same fight over and over again, and don’t seem to learn from it. Everyone keeps secrets yet still get mad when they learn about others keeping secrets from them. Really a bit of a let down from book 1, and don’t get me started on the cliffhanger. Will still read book 3 though, just hope the editors have more time to fix things next time.

The story was absolutely amazing, and would have been 5 stars except for the interactions between Violet and Cat. I don't believe she added anything to the story besides angst for Violet and to serve as the "jealous bitch". I just don't think a strong woman, note WOMAN not teenager, would care? Also, the constant "can I trust him?" "oh woe is me" from Violet got old...Xaden is literally leading a revolution and it's silly to get upset over the stuff he "hid" from her when most of the time it was secrets keeping her/the nation/himself safe. It's very immature of her, and I fully take Xaden's side in it... Having secrets doesn't mean the person doesn't love you, especially if the secret can get you or someone you care about killed. Lastly, the twist ending makes me a little concerned especially with the "you'll be the greatest enemy" line... I will be forever upset with the author if she makes that a reality and the next book isn't about fixing what happened.

violet: xaden i can't do this if you keep keeping secrets from me
xaden: *proceeds to keep even more secrets from her*

I know, I know, many of you hated the romance drama here but before I am a Romantasy or Fantasy girlie, I am a Romance girlie and lemme tell you, I LIVED for this

Xaden and Violet still love eachother so much and I know in my heart that they'll make it but I could still understand all their fights and disagreements and I could also understand Violet's perspective (even if many here seem to not 🙃). And their making up scenes were the best hihi

What I absolutely hated was the OW drama 🙅🏻‍♀ sooo unnecessary

I would've loved some more action from the start! Violet finds out there's a revolution, oh my god 😍 and then she...goes back to school? And then they all join the revolution! Fun! 🥳 And then...they have more school? Yeah, that's a thing readers have often complained about when books are set in a school but maybe there was a reason the school part wasn't always present 😭 It got boring so quickly. I still found it quite comforting (yeah I know, kinda weird) for some reason, just like book 1, but it was also boring (those things CAN coexist).

But once we get into the action and all the gryphon riders get important, too, I was so ready for it! Violet leaving Basgiath also sees her entering a whole new dimension of this war and the way it's going to impact the whole continent.

I still don't really understand the whole Darkwielder/Venin thing and its details but going by that ending we'll soon find out more 👀

The ending part before the ending (y'know) got a bit too messy for me and didn't have the emotional punch for me that it obviously had for Violet. Just couldn't feel that connection!

A connection I *could* feel was Mira & Violet <3 absolute highlight 🥹 (Brennan's a bit annoying though ngl)

No matter my few criticisms, I spent every minute I had listening to this book and I'm soo excited for the next one 🙏🏻

Not quite as good as Fourth Wing (honestly, that might be impossible so I knew it probably wouldn’t / couldn’t be), but Iron Flame still had a death grip on me until I finished it. I read FW and IF back-to-back, and I felt like I was living on adrenaline and almost disassociated from my life because ALL I WANTED TO DO WAS READ AND ALL I WAS THINKING ABOUT WAS THIS SERIES. I read literally all night until 7am or later multiple times. I was so sad when I finished IF because now I have to wait until the next book is released. But at the same time, the flood of relief I felt when I finished was PALPABLE (like after you turn in the last thing during exam week after running on fumes for days) lol. I was like thank god I’m no longer held captive by these books and can relax now and get back to my normal life haha
A few things that brought it down from 5 stars for me: Violet and Xaden’s relationship dynamic gets pretty repetitive and frustrating, but I’m hoping that it was intentional and we’ll see growth from them moving forward. I also didn’t like how many times the story jumped forward to the next day or several days / weeks later because I felt like I was missing things (like, did they talk about xyz but we didn’t see it or have they not even discussed it?). I just want to know what happens every minute of every day!! Even the “boring” day-to-day stuff because that’s when we get to see Violet’s friends and learn more about the world :( but I also get that it’s already a long book. Similar to FW, the writing is simply fine — not so terrible it ruins the story but also not good (I swear to god everything is measured in heartbeats as if this world does not have any other unit to measure time)

Great sequel. Yarros's world building is intricate and magnetic, woven so tightly with the development of plot and character arcs that the book is practically impossible to put down.
The twist ending seems utterly cruel, and I'm oddly excited to see what the third book does with it.
