I really enjoyed the two-part plot of this book, especially the tension-building espionage bits and the magic system expansion. Not sure why it has a bad rap for being “boring” and “plotless” since there was plenty of conflict and adventure!

there was simply no good reason for this book to be the 900 pages or so that it was, and i feel like a lot of the really good/fun parts of what i liked about fourth wing got lost because of it

honestly the reason this got the stars it did was because i love the dragons and violets squad more than anything else. that, and i can understand why the girlies like xaden

but violet ?? dear god i’ve never wanted her to stop whining more. girl it’s WAR there’s gonna be secrets stop crying about it and move tf on. and the weird jealousy thing with cat ??? hated that too. also 95% of this book has me really having a hard time believing that violet is smart because she sure acts like the dumbest bitch in basgiath and maybe the whole continent

the last 10% of the book got me hooked enough to want to read onyx storm, mostly to see what happens, on top of again i did have a fair amount of fun when the plot WAS good. i feel like this book could’ve used so much more editing and time to make a better story instead of (what felt to me like) a bunch of stories shoved into one long book.

idk the writing rly wasn’t that great and the book relies a lot on vibes and at times in this book even those weren’t great. glad i didn’t waste money on it (can’t say the same for my time tho)

anyways i would die for tairn and that’s about it

Overall better than the first, plot quite gripping but would be better without certain types of content

Towards the middle, it started to get a bit boring and felt more like a chore I had to finish.

I ended up loving the first book in this series, despite a rocky start. This book ... Not so much. It was long and slow. Every traumatic event was instantly cured by massive amounts of unrealisticly amazing sex. I don't mind the steamy scenes, but come on. Maybe some therapy? Or not 3+ different scenes where it's horror followed by mind blowing sex?? By the 3rd-ish sex scene I was FF to get back to the plot already. And there was definitely some lacking information and character building, despite the obvious (sometimes laboriously so) information building happening to fill in holes. By the time we figure out Jack and Andarna and General Sorengail dies... I felt like some of those things fell flat because we hadn't been getting much from or about those characters. I dunno, overall this one just moved slowly, had too much sex and not enough really good driving plot. And it was LONG. I'm taking a break, no desire to dive into book 3 after the crummy ending on top of a long, annoying book.

So what the hell did I just read? That was amazing. It kept me engaged just as much as the first book, and the character development of both Violet and Xaden was phenomenally done. The plot twists are never ending and well executed. It’s just genuinely so good.

Love doesn’t even have the decency to die. It just transforms into abject misery. That’s what this ache in my chest is: misery. Because love, at its root, is hope. Hope for tomorrow. Hope for what could be. Hope that the someone you’ve entrusted your everything to will cradle and protect it. And hope? That shit is harder to kill than a dragon.

My favorite series EVER. First time I feel SEEN in fantasy as a chronically ill person with chronic pain. The representation and the dragons and the characters and the world building make this book a 100/5 stars

I’m absolutely loving the Empyrean so far! Looking forward to seeing what comes next in Onyx Storm after that insane cliff hanger.

PS: I love love love Andarna and the adopted daughter vibes.
