“She may not be a mighty warrior, but one thing she’d learned after observing her mother, was that if anything could fell a warrior, it was a determined woman.”

What I LOVED: When I read the synopsis for this story, I was hooked by the unique premise and original story outline. The author based Eveline’s deafness off of her husband’s own hearing condition (as she explains in an author’s note) and while I can only comment as a person with no hearing impairment, that aspect feels well represented, but I welcome any corrections from the deaf community. The side characters in this story including Graeme’s brothers and sister, as well as Eveline’s family were all interesting and I would be excited to also read their stories.

What I DIDN’T love: Eveline is repeatedly (& I mean REPEATedly) referred to as “daft” or “touched” etc because she does not speak and, in her family’s mind, has never fully recovered from her accident. As a neurodivergent woman and the mother of a non-verbal child, the vocabulary and phrasing made me uncomfortable. Our hero, Graeme, also repeatedly chastises himself for being attracted to Eveline, who he thinks of as a disabled woman, as if disabled people aren’t desirable or aren’t capable of desire. Again, it just made me uncomfortable.

This is a hard one to rate. Overall, the story does progress fairly quickly and Eveline’s story starts to unravel pretty early on so the disagreeable descriptions do teeter off, which was a relief. In the end, I did enjoy watching these two characters come together and having their romance unfold.

“My lady, I don’t simply care for her. I love her. She is my entire life. Without her, I am nothing. I have nothing.”

I would give the book a 3.5 star. The story was good and the love described was realistic nothing too imaginary.

me reading a historical romance? who is she

Maya Banks books are usually hit or miss for me but the way she knocks her highlander romances out of the park threw me for a loop. And it was a freaking FANTASTIC loop. The heroine, despite being deaf, is so strong and tries so hard to fit in; there were times that I was just heartbroken at the ill treatment she had to withstand from the people in Graeme's clan. Of course the hero was not one of those who treated her poorly. Instead he stood by her, supported her and relied on her srength when he needed to as well. The way he was with Eveline just made me love him that much more.

This rating is really about 10K stars because it was that good. I don't do many re-reads of books (save for Kristen Ashley and Cherise Sinclair) but this is a definite re-read for me.

I had really high expectations, so while this was really good it wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. It was so sweet though and was such an easy read because sometimes you just need something that isn’t too dark and angsty.
fast-paced

By far the sweetest historical romance I have ever read! Hoping this is a sign that December will be a much better reading month than November!
