Catch 22

Joseph Heller

3.5 - clearly brilliant and bitingly witty, but not an easy read—I found the chronology baffling and the whole thing longer than I would’ve wished for, without any real development in anything. Glad I read it, but I’m not likely to read it again.

Minimal yet specific character writing creates a complex satire around the depth of their said characters and their interactions with each other and their world. Beautiful and heartwrenching, Catch-22 is a wonderful piece of existentialist literature on the border of absurdism, and of historical fiction at its finest.

More testimony to the fact that first impressions don't count for much. I first picked up this book about 10 years ago, read about 10 pages, and put it down as unreadable. This time I thought it was genius. I think that there's so much mood and energy level and mental readiness that goes into reading any book that it's smart to distrust negative first impressions of any work that's widely considered to be, like, a masterpiece.

Easily one of my favorite books of all time.
So relevant, so widely applicable. Downright silliness at some parts but always with the underlying horror- using comedy to cope.
One of the most unique and original books I’ve ever read.
