This was a sweet story, and I really loved the two color illustrations. The red amongst the brown was able to highlight many things that brought each party of the story into focus.

DID NOT FINISH

 Out of Print

This book is about a little boy in the woods of fall and winter wanting desperately to see a red-tailed fox in the woods. Some noise keeps scaring the fox away. He found his fox hole with his dog one day.

I don't know why I loved this story so much really. I did. It is like those 40's stories with way too many words and too long. I love the water colors. For me, what it does is evoke fall and winter in my mind. I'm a kid walking through the woods behind my house in fall, the leaves crackling, or I'm walking on the frozen creek in the winter back in the woods. I could never be quiet like Roger, but I loved being in the woods and around the trees. This book flooded me with memories! It was perfect for me.

I did read this to the kids and it got real long for them and they began losing interest. They gave it 3 stars.

From the same team that brought us The Wild Birthday Cake.

Lovely tinted pencil drawings are paired with period text in this story about a young boy hoping to see a fox. The length and tone are older than most pictures books today, though it is younger in tone than a chapter book.
