A wonderful plot. Excellent pacing. Heartfelt characters who have developed outside the scope of the MC's actions. And a sinister hidden antagonist. Put them all together and you end up getting Black Fall, book 3 of the Jessica Blackwood series.

Mayne crushes it. Black Fall is arguably the best, most cryptic, and well-written of the Jessica Blackwood novels. Our MC continues to develop in troves, realizing her own weaknesses and faults and learning to learn on others. At the same time, the supporting cast begin to develop additional quirks and behaviors based off of their own experiences throughout the length of this novel. Our plot is intricate, conspiratorial, and echoes similar sentiments that were felt in the later half of the 2020's.

And now.....I must wait 4 days for Mastermind. Oh the waiting....

First two in the series were better. This was good but just a bit much. Of all the books I’ve read by Mr. Mayne this was the least good but hopefully that says more in a positive way about every other book.

This one’s really a 3.5 for me - still interesting and engaging, but not as good as the first two in the series. I think the large scale of the events involved perhaps pushed it a bit too far away from the kind of thriller I prefer.

Still liking the series, but this one wasn't as tight as the previous two. There was something off about the pacing, especially toward the end.

Part of what I've been enjoying is the way stage magic is tied into the books, and it felt like this one was getting further away from that. While the main concept of the book is very topical, especially considering the almost daily revelations about Russia's interference in the 2016 US election, the whole thing felt thematically distanced from the core theme of the series.

VERDICT: 3+ stars. Weird predictions/disasters, possible Armageddon?
Low-moderate realism (like Books 1 & 2), but still fun--plus some magic.

I love these books about magician-turned-FBI agent Jessica Blackwood, written by real-life magician Andrew Mayne. Strange video predictions about natural disasters are coming from a long-dead physicist, which sets off Jessica's natural skepticism about supernatural things being tricks. But how can a person predict or cause a natural disaster? That's what she has to figure out. She consults her magician grandfather for help on this one.
