Lonesome Dove has some of the most dynamic and lovable characters I have ever read, and I think that’s really what brought this story to life. All of the characters, but mainly Augustus, made me laugh and cry throughout the book, and I felt like I was with them on their journey from Texas to Montana. I have to say one of my favorite parts was watching Call work with his horse Hell B*tch; I thought that relationship alone was the best characterization of Call within the whole book. Lonesome Dove is special in the way it reveals seemingly minor traits in all the characters until you know everything about them, and become attached as if they are real. Overall, I was surprised to find that there were quite a lot of well-rounded and interesting women characters. I felt like the sexist remarks/actions many of the cowboys and other male characters did were written to depict the time period, and it was clear to me that the author did not agree with these opinions. I think Blue Duck was poorly portrayed and a very stereotypical “Indian” and I didn’t like his parts in the book. However, I do feel like the book provided all different types of people, including quite a lot of accurate accounts on white settlers taking Native American land. I definitely recommend this book, however I would say that there are some dark tones in the book that may not be for everyone.
