This book took a long time to read. I felt I had to pay attention to everything and really focus. Normally I don't like this type of structure with multiple stories intertwining, but this was just so well done. I was hoping for a bit of a stronger tie between the stories, so I was partially disappointed by the end. But upon reflection, I loved it.

Please consider, before reading, looking up some trigger warnings for this book.

Mine is not an objective review: I truly believe this deserves more than 3 stars, but some moments have been *really* hard for me to read about, so I can't get myself to give a higher vote.

This is truly a work worth experiencing and I am glad I got to. I wish I had looked it up more carefully beforehand.

This is a creative, clever post-modernist novel that combines a lot of the favorite things I look for in a book. I enjoyed the sci-fi aspects, the suspense, the humor, the puzzle tying the various stories together, and most of all the characters. The characters were extremely diverse and their stories so different, but throughout the book I found myself engaged in each character's tale and feeling like the characters are all connected. The book is like a virtuosic concerto, displaying Mitchell's rigor as a writer as well as his ability to write a variety of genres with excellent skill. It demands some patience and endurance from the reader, but overall it was well worth the time it took to get through it.
