I thought it was a little tedious, particularly all the explanations of each of the puzzles they solve over the course of the story. Mello's narration felt off to me as well, mostly because it was clearly Misora's point of view we were seeing, and it would've been impossible for Mello to know her inner thoughts.

I liked the ending though, and enjoyed the comedic interactions between Misora and Ryuzaki throughout.

death note and i have a complicated relationship, which is to say that i really don't like the main story but for some reason keep encountering the peripheral materials and loving them.

this book is camp. it's performance art. it's an investigative novel in the same way that the ace attorney games are detective games: everything is conjecture and the points don't matter. naomi solves this case with loose word association, at best. she does capoeira. for some unknowable reason this is all from mello's perspective — mello is not in this story.

i laughed out loud several times.
