I think the first four stories are really strong, however the second half of this is tough to get through.

A short book, and for me, an investment of diminishing returns. I found each story less engaging.

first half really had me. Then I lost interest, but I really liked what I read.

If I could rate just the first four stories of this collection, this would be a five star review.
Unfortunately, the genius of Mr. Chambers seems to have been fully poured in his “King in Yellow” related fiction.
All other stories contained in this book are average to mediocre at best, full of filler dialogue and way too many characters that do not add anything to the plot.
Due to a number of archaisms (and I have no issues with Lovecraft who wrote his stories just 20 years later) and the dialect-speech of some characters I had a hard time understanding what was actually the topic of conversation or what was actually happening. And in some cases it didn’t even matter.
H.P. Lovecraft had great appreciation of the short “King in Yellow” - Cycle, and I totally get why. It’s weird fiction at its best.
However I can’t say that any of the other stories published in this book are worth reading. They are tedious, repetitive, and poorly written.
