This is my new favourite sci-fi series! I enjoyed this way more than ice planet barbarians. There is such a good plot and the world is so interesting. I loved the grumpy sunshine aspect! I also enjoyed how the story progressed! It will definitely be added to my book shelf so I can reread every year!

I enjoyed this for the most part! I think Theo wasn’t quite what I was expecting, and as always tbh the epilogue kinda soured me on it a bit but that’s just because I don’t like pregnancy in books. I think the sexual encounters were a lot more aggressive than I was wanting them to be, I’m starting to think I just don’t like when the characters in romance books are incredibly different during sex than they are all other times. Everything mentioned in the blurb is kind of glossed over in the book, she only wants to go back to earth for a super short time and she doesn’t really debate at all before deciding to just stay forever which is shown in a single line. He only really thinks she’s a spy for like a couple chapters before he kind of just gives up on it and it no longer matters. They never work through either of these things really.
One major thing that held me back from really sinking in and enjoying this was the questionable view/portrayal of womanhood and the value women have in the world this takes place in. I’m used to these kinds of books being incredibly gender essentialist so I’ve come to be better at kind of glossing over it as much as I can but the addition of the kind of forced marriage and mating and pregnancies combined with the ham-fisted message that this was all good and that women are treated well in that society and that men actually enjoy the way things are, just kind of did me in to be honest.
I think I also just really disliked the twist that humans are actually the same/a related species. Made it less interesting to me.
