4.5/5 stars - wow! this was so enchanting and whimsical. I loved Casiopea and Hun-Kamé, they made me so smiley. I loved the pieces of Mayan mythology and the 1920's jazz-age setting, while keeping real with the (unfortunate) americanization of Mexico.
-
spoilery thoughts:
- I loved the concept of Hun-Kame becoming more mortal as he spent time with Casiopea and her energy being drained
- The Black Road answering to her demands, "it will take you where you lead it"
- Mentions of Francisco Quevedo, and her secret name for Hun-Kame
- Loved the idea of Vucub-Kame bringing two pieces of the world where dormant God power lies, together in one
- Giving voice to your thoughts makes them true, was loose, but a great way to wrap up the story
- Even though they didn't find themselves together afterwards, Casiopea sets off on her new adventure (them staring at the stars in the ocean, dreaming between the two of them)

quotes:
“Words are seeds, Casiopea. With words you embroider narratives, and the narratives breed myths, and there's power in the myth. Yes, the things you name have power.”
“He'd fallen in love slowly and quietly, and it was a quiet sort of love, full of phrases left unsaid, laced with dreams.”
“The things you name grow in power.”

The pacing was slow and I didn’t like or identify with any of the characters. I love this author but this book was not on the same level as her others.

I enjoyed this adventure of self worth and strength from the FMC while also getting to learn about aztec mythology

I’ve honestly tried reading this book so many times. I finally finished it and it has the makings of something I should have loved, but I didn’t. Maybe I’ll give it another chance somewhere further down the road. It takes place in 1920s Mexico and follows a young girl and the former ruler of the Mayan underworld.
