The artwork throughout Florence & Leon is undeniably beautiful; it made me want to meet these characters and connect with their lives. However, the story line sadly presents itself in a didactic manner, with unnecessary explanations as though young readers' comprehension skills have been underestimated. I didn't expect this type of written work given the minimalist and warm artwork. Overall, this book has beautiful illustrations and a beautiful story, but falls short in how the story is told (i.e. a lot of 'telling' rather than 'showing'). I may recommend it to library patrons, but not as a first choice.
