Liked this one too. Didn't like it as much as the first one. I thought that the story was cut short and not much danger happened.

Great second book to the "Brian Series". On to the next.

Hatchet was a book I absolutely loved growing up, but I never read any of Gary Paulsen's other books. I decided to change that after I did a re-read of all the Newbery books two years ago, but still managed to put it off until now. Oops!

The River was a good, quick little read that continued the story of Brian's quest for survival under harsh conditions. This time he goes in willingly and sans hatchet even! It was a little predictable and a bit too dramatic, but that doesn't mean I still didn't like it! Of course something big was going to happen, Brian wasn't going to just go into the woods and have everything be cushy, but the cheese factor ya'll!

Not as good as Hatchet, but still good enough for me to read the rest. I know there are at least five of these, maybe more. Better get going!

So what did Deborah think about returning to the wilderness?

3.5 stars. I did say that Brian needed a companion. That more dialogue was the one thing missing from Hatchet. But I didn't mean Derek
