I didn’t really connect with either of the main characters. I also didn’t really understand their connection and the MMC spent so much time only wanting to bed her, that it was off-putting. He went from “I’ll never get married or have kids” for 95% of the book, to then in the last hour changing his mind and being fully onboard. FMC clearly stated her boundaries multiple times, and he kept pressuring her. Bit of a turn off. The side characters had more personality

Entertaining. Good sense of variety of story and dynamics for character interactions.

I disliked the scene where he feeds her the teacup.

The hiccups and hurdles to HEA were entertaining and not as cliched as usual with romances set in C19 England.

This was a quick and enjoyable read. I liked the characters and their relationships, the plot kept my interest, and I found the writing style to be engaging.

My enjoyment of romance is based on if I'm rooting for the couple and I have to say with this one I was not. Both the main characters are assholes at best and truly terrible people at worst. So I guess they deserved eachother, but I didn't think either of them deserves a happy ending.

It gets 2 stars mostly because the actual writing was good. This was my first Kleypas book, and I'll probably give her another go based on writing.

Re-read. The following is my original review: 5⭐️ Utterly romantic. Devon and Kathleen both have big personalities and tons of stubbornness. I loved them together and the way they challenged each other. There were so many amazing characters. I can’t wait to read Helen & Rhys’s story.

Honestly this book is well crafted, well executed, beautifully written and delightfully steamy — I just couldn’t stand the hero and heroine. She was such an Enneagram 1 propriety miss it grated, and he was obnoxiously controlling and arrogant (beyond the trope fun, for me), even if it was a consistent characteristic. I loved the supporting cast and really just stuck it out so I’d go into Marrying Winterbourne with the full backstory (so far: very worth it to do so!).

finals thoughts:
- absolutely adored the familial interactions between West, Kathleen and the Ladies Ravenel
- wasn't completely sold on the romance between Devon and Kathleen until after the maybe 60% mark and it was kind of dubious even then
- not sure how I feel on the set up of Helen and Rhys's book being the failed engagement, but am intrigued enough to read it
