There is a strong possibility that I loved this more than I loved City of Bones. It's a great series opener because it resolves the main plot points of the novel while leaving readers with issues to be resolved in books two and three.

More! I want more, I tell you! SO not fair that we must wait!
Oh, oh heavens I just love it when I‘m so hooked by a book!
Will and Jem are— they are truly mesmerising and I completely understand why Tessa is so taken with the both of them. (Me too, since like, seventh grade, but here we are again)
Nathaniel can rot in hell for all I care.
So excited to read the second book! <3

I read this series the first time as a teenager and, in my desperation of getting out of my slump, began a reread. It did not disappoint.
This book brought back so much nostalgia and my own love for the series. It was wonderful meeting the characters—ones I loved as a kid—again, fitting back into their world just as easily as I entered it the first time. This book reminded me why I love reading so much.
I don’t have much to say in terms of criticism, mostly because this book was truly intended to be a YA book and will have the conventions of such. I just love the way Cassandra Clare used it to her advantage that it doesn’t wholly feel like YA. This book (and series) could just be as easily enjoyed by someone older, more mature.
The world building is phenomenal, so rich in history that it makes it feel so real. There was no huge dump of information that may be overwhelming. The prose is simple yet beautiful, and very reminiscent of old classics; a true piece of historical fiction. The characters were complex and interesting—no one bored me. I truly love them all.

3.75
Clockwork Angel, the first book in the Infernal Devices trilogy, definitely felt very different from the first three Mortal Instruments books. I liked the premise well enough; I love anything set in Victorian London, truly. It is much more serious than the Mortal Instruments; there are higher stakes, more tension, and, in my opinion, much more complex characters. That was until I found out it was a love triangle.....
Listen, I will be the first one to say that this is truly a ME thing. I loathe love triangles with a passion, always have, always will. I just never think they are done well enough for me to ever put myself through them. And as spoilers would have it, I spoiled myself by accident, I was right, insert standing woman emoji. However, I powered through because there's not much of it in the first book, and the plot was genuinely interesting throughout the book, and I was entertained.
I am giving this book 3.75 stars because, as much as it truly isn't its fault I didn't enjoy it to its full potential, the fact still stands that I just didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to.
People will say, then don't continue the series, and to that I say, "I accept the challenge," because I hate myself way too much not to continue
Anyways, I shall be back when I finish the second book, expected by 2027. I am in a detrimental reading slump as we speak, not because of this book, though.

This is by far my favorite and by far the best of all the Cassandra Clare/Shadowhunter universe books. It is at the core a Victorian era romance, but there are moments of genuine fear, internal battles, generational trauma, and so much more depth that I don't typically find in YA fantasy. I am biased towards the Shadowhunter universe and can generally see why they are polarizing, but this has a truly wide reaching appeal and I would not hesitate to recommend it to any fantasy/YA reader.
