glad to read a classic and one that at least attempts to teach about WWI. unfortunately, it’s a bit too muddled to actually leave much of a mark. not without it’s moments, but they are few and far between.

i thought the dialogue was choppy and the characters all seemed a little crazy since their thoughts were so scattered. the little love story was what kept me reading, the journey they took as a couple was brilliantly written but completely hopeless

Here is my favorite part I am putting it in my review so I can come back to it a million times:

“Oh, darling, I want you so much I want to be you too.”

“You are. We’re the same one.”

“I know it. At night we are.”

“The nights are grand.”

“I want us to be all mixed up. I don’t want you to go away. I just said that. You go if you want to. But hurry right back. Why, darling, I don’t live at all when I’m not with you.”

The dialogue was painful. Catherine was needy and weak, although there were some great moments and great quotes. I had a had time not being judgy with my 2024 knowledge of alcohol use in pregnancy, alcoholism in general, and healthy relationships. The last twenty pages made the whole book more interesting.

Very good. Protagonists naivety drives the story, but sickens slightly. A shade of puke, but deliberate.

I really enjoyed this book. Had no idea what it would be going in, had only heard vague complaints about Hemingway before.
The prose is my favourite part, he does a great job capturing real dialogue and feelings and thoughts.
Love Rinaldi, “Hey, baby.”
Keep thinking about this book so I think I really like it bumping it up.
