Farewell to Arms is a typical Hemingway novel. The prose is direct and void of flowery language. Emotions are buried and men war and fall in love.

It is about WWI but not really. The war is more of a setting than a plot point. There are few rambling descriptions of mud and trenches. Instead, it’s a love story set to war. The novel is neither optimistic nor cheery, but it is not as bleak as other war stories.

The story is nearer and less adventurous than The Sun Also Rises. The writing is accessible and the characters compelling.

If you like Hemingway, you’ll like Farewell to Arms.

I think my review will be unfair as I believe it was “reader error” more than author error. As I read I found myself comparing this book to some of my favorites… and that’s not fair to the text. The time it was written was very different: lifestyles, customs, norms, etc.

I found the characters too “stereotypical” and boring. I found the plot very jumpy from “book” to “book”. More than once I wanted to slap Catherine into smarts. The ending for all the details throughout the noon felt abrupt.

I am very glad I read a book by Hemingway and might, someday, far in the future, read another.

I liked the style, and that was basically why I enjoyed this story because I cannot stand war books. The ending was a bit... underwhelming? As if there were still some chapters missing, because it ends too abruptly

Definitely worth revisiting. The ending was an absolute gut punch. I loved it

Literally so boring. Hemingway is a good writer, but the story was dull. The main character was deplorable at best.
However, this is the best depiction of translating between languages I've yet to read. It seems small, but it made the book less dull.
