Just to say that I’m not liking Frederick Henry very much and by extension his creator, Ernest Hemingway. Henry is a selfish and contemptible drunk. Hemingway’s staccato is as irritating as his desiccated disregard for the suffering of others in the novel is appalling. And I’m only approaching the middle. Ugh. Are all his stories about relationships and their power games? Up in Michigan (sexual assault), Mountains like Elephants (abortion)...The Sun Also Rises(ED). I see a pattern. Well, Daisy Buchanan was no paradigm of feminine virtue but Fitzgerald seems more fully human somehow. I’d rather have his soaring strings to Hemingway’s persistent pizzicato. Like I said, just saying.

This book was ass. I just might not be smart enough to understand why it was so repetitive but it made it painful to read.

I liked the book a lot. By chance, I read it also while being in Northern Italy, in the same places that are described in the book.
Like the main character, I am a foreigner who speaks some italian. I can interact with the locals, and try to appreciate the culture, while at the same time being distanced.
As a consequence, it felt very real.
Besides that, the book tells a love story amidst the horrors of world war one.
As apparently typical for Hemingway, the emotional descriptions are rather vague, which leaves room for interpretation. If you're willing to imagine what is happening emotionally below the surface, the book has a lot of depth.

Long hard read
This novel took some time to get into the story, but once I did it was interesting and perfect Hemingway.

Supongo que tiene sentido inventarse un romance como oasis en medio de la guerra, good coping mechanism I guess
