DID NOT FINISH

I tried, I really did, but I didn't get on with the writing style at all - I even found Jack Kerouac easier to read!

Better than Old Man and the see if only for the historical perspective. Found main characters a little one dimensional.

loved this

I really liked the parts that involved the war. The bits with Catherine, not so much. DANG was she annoying. I do love the style of Hemingway's writing, but his "he-man woman hating" can be a drag, although thankfully it wasn't as prevalent in this book.

When I was in school I was a really good student, and even if I didn't like a book, such as The Scarlet Letter or Great Expectations, I always read it (never resorted to Cliff Notes) and I can at least recall still some things from the books still, such as images or plot points. Then there is Hemingway and A Farewell to Arms. I HATED this book - hated the style, hated his lack of imagery, hated the "romance" of it. The only way I can think to describe the reason I hated it was that for me it was like reading a textbook or a particularly boring passage from the Bible. I'm reading the words, but when I get to the bottom of the page I can't tell you what I just read, it's just a collection of words and not even a poetical or beautiful collection of words. I really don't understand why he's considered a great American writer?

I picked this book up because I wanted to love Ernest Hemingway. I didn't. Maybe I missed the point, which is possible. I suppose I had built up what I thought would be the Hemingway experience over the years (and I've lived a few to increase the hype over time). I liked the story. I didn't like the dialogue -- found it very unnatural.

I'm not giving up, however. I will try another Hemingway in time. Maybe in a different frame of mind, with a different book, I'll see what so many others see.

OK, not one of Hemingway's best but decent.
