I enjoyed the farcical scene with the Swiss police. I also didn’t mind the writing style of simple words and generally short sentences, but overall struggled to enjoy the book. Women in this book are portrayed ridiculously - by turn hysterical, pliable or pathetic. Or sometimes all three in subsequent sentences.
I hate I didn’t love this book, but the characters are so shallow and outside of the last chapter (which is so so good) it’s just doesn’t live up to its reputation. The dialogue is stilted and unbelievable. Even the touching parts like the relationship between Fredrick and the priest are just not deep or satisfying.
I was surprised at how difficult the book was at first before finding the authors rhythm. I don’t recall Hemingway being that way but it does make sense.
I’m not buying it as the great American novel of WWI. I wish I felt differently!

So cheesy.... so bad... very uber predictable writing. Not the best book choice school board, not at all...
My least favorite of Papa's major novels. It merits mention fo rbeing a conversation starter. I was reading this in a pub and was approached by a guy. He proved to be a nutter. I didn't know that then. He approached, pointed to my book and began rambling about how Hemingway and Hunter Thompson understood the essence of things (this was years before Thompson's suicide) and that their lives of excess were a just a relief for their clairty. That is my paraphrase. I wound up talking to the guy for hours and drinking a deal of beeer. I have seen him twice since then. He doesn't appear to remember me.
