The war story deserves 3 stars. The rest of it - the romance, Catherine Barkley, the dialogue, the ending - gets NO STARS, and I threw the book across the room as soon as I finished.

Aaaaaaaughhhaaaaaaaaahhh.

This book gets a 5 for many reasons. Here are just a couple:

* It's a very human story with the backdrop of the war. When I think of Ernest Hemingway, the word "sensitive" never has come to mind.
* Mr. Hemingway's minimal writing style. It seems that there is now unnecessary paragraph, word, or sentence in the book. Wow!

I highly recommend this book. It helped me better understand more why Ernest Hemingway is one of our best authors.

A couple of quotes:

“The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places.”

“I’m not brave any more darling. I’m all broken. They’ve broken me.”

"But life isn't hard to manage when you've nothing to lose.”

“When you love you wish to do things for. You wish to sacrifice for. You wish to serve.”

“There isn’t always an explanation for everything.”

“Cowards die a thousand deaths, but the brave only die once.”

“There isn't any me. I'm you. Don't make up a separate me.”

“War is not won by victory.”

“You're my religion. You're all I've got.”

“Anger was washed away in the river along with any obligation.”
