This was my first Hemingway and I enjoyed it very much so. It was strange how little yet how much happened. Didn't expect such ending after the tone the rest of the book was written in.
It’s really difficult to personally enjoy a book that was a reading assignment in High School. This was one of the few exceptions. Hemingway’s casual yet eloquent voice and style drew me in, and despite not being able to relate whatsoever with the characters’ lives and situations (World War I was a century ago!), the emotion and behaviors tied to these characters struck a chord within me, and ever since I’ve been a fan of Hemingway’s works. Both people wanting a war account and those of us that love a heart-wrenching love story will find something to enjoy in this novel.

That was what you did. You died. You did not know what it was about. You never had time to learn. They threw you in and told you the rules and the first time they caught you off base they killed you.
Wow... It took me a long time to warm up to this book. At the 60% mark, I was attached and felt for the characters.
"A Farewell to Arms" is a semiautobiographical tale of Hemingway's experiences in World War I. Our main character is an American ambulance driver on the Italian front named Frederic Henry.
History books and teachings of war tell its reader that war needed to happen and it was for Justice. How it was black and white. In reality, it was none of that. Hemingway shows the most real part of war; Being forced into it and just trying to survive. Holding onto any hope you can to keep going onto the next day. Whether it be love, religion, friendship, family, or... Simply alcohol to dull the pain of reality.
Don't expect an action hero story. This is about a single man's experience of the horrors of war and how some deaths truly have no meaning.

Beautiful book in what appears to be a vast genre of thoughtful/cynical stories on WWI. Definitely captures the absurdity of war in a way that has become almost hackneyed in the years since it was written. Don't love the characters, but I do appreciate what Hemingway contributed to the genre.
