Hemingway paints a bleak picture of 1918 Italy during wartime. His characteristic rambling sentences take some getting used to, and his use of the N word made me pause and close the book twice in disbelief, but I chose to persevere…

What I appreciated and enjoyed about this book was a glimpse into a life, into a moment in time, that is so different to my own. The story and the emotions aroused from it are deeply human and the characters seem almost real. It’s bleak. It’s unsavoury at times. It’s scary. And spoiler, it’s fucking tragic.

DNF.

There is something special about having to read a book for college. I've spent the last 10 hours talking about this book and two others. You learn so much about the author and his work, it becomes impossible to hate. I can honestly say that this book touched me and I would love to read it again

STATUS UPDATE: I read it again and I liked it less. Woops.

I think the writing is brilliant and thought provoking, i really enjoyed analysing it, but if i hadn’t read it critically and from the perspective of a literature student i would not say this was exactly an enjoyable read. That being said, i can appreciate the heaviness of it and I really do admire the art of Hemingway’s descriptions and the layers to what he writes. Particularly in paragraphs you initially read as mundane, boring or too literal - it’s interesting to notice how much meaning is actually behind such few words.
