I do not know how to feel about this book. It was a dull start, then got quite interesting and then idk. Such an ending deserves understanding that I don’t seem to have. Was there a point? Did I miss the point? What arms was he saying farewell to? Am I of the wrong generation, culture, industry, or gender to comprehend this book? I like parts of it, for sure. As a whole, I’m not sure. Stay tuned.
Hemingway's books always scared me. I don't know why, but I had figured his book would be so difficult to read and enjoy. And now I'm so happy that not only is this not the case but that I have all the rest of his books to discover for the first time.
Honestly, I don't know how to rate this book.
I fell in love with Ernest Hemingway writing. I will definitely be reading his other novels now.

Interesting looking at people's reviews of this book. I totally agreed with those that found Catherine's character to be heavily lacking, which made for an odd love story. (And most of the other characters feel much more fleshed out than Catherine). But I didn't find their dialogue to be childlike--to me it depicted how I imagine two people might talk who want nothing more than to disappear from the craziness that surrounds them.
To me, in the end it was more of a war story than a love story. And to be precise, a war-is-crazy story--that, I thought, was done very well. Tough descriptions of injuries, interesting friendships.
And then I did enjoy all the food descriptions--especially at aperitivo time!

Is it possible to feel even more devastated now by the end (really by the whole second half) of this book than I did when I first read it as a junior or senior in high school? Yeah. I'm much more familiar with the breaking Hemingway captures here. "It is in defeat that we become Christian." Now I know how true that is.

this was a nightmare to get through and every page i was vowing to myself that i would never pick up a hemingway ever again and every conversation between sexist caricature catherine and the narrator made me want to bash my head in and then i got to the end. and i’m not sure if this is 3 stars or 4 or 5.
I thought this book was going to be about a double amputee coming to terms with his condition, but instead I got a book about being blown up while eating cheese.
Hemingway’s sparse, matter of fact style was refreshing. This novel is absolutely devastating. I can see why Bradley Cooper got so pissed off in Silver Linings Playbook, bipolar disorder or no. However, I would never dream of throwing this book out of a closed window. I quite enjoyed it.
