"When some people think about the sea, they think about summer holidays and sipping sangria on the beach. When I think about the sea, I remember the number of Somali people - my people - who risk their lives every night and every day by corssinf the sea on cargo boats, in hopes of finding sanctuary in strange and often inhospitable countries. Most of these people, whose lives remain undocumented, die at sea. Some survive, but they always carry their loss and guilt and shame with them. We Once Belonged to the Sea is about dicing unto one's own painful history and not worrying about resurfacing.  If you are lucky, like me, you will resurface, but many people don't recover from their pasts."
