Absolutely fantastic book. Some of my favorite character development I’ve read since Robin Hobb! I can see why someone would have a hard time with this book. This one is definitely a slow burn but it’s not boring to me in the slightest. Jezal has become my favorite character. I’m not sure how to feel about Glokta or Logen as of yet but they’re still a blast to read about. On to the next!

I've tried reading this book. Twice. Everyone rants and raves about how great it is. I feel like I'm reading a different book.
I've made it 25% in and just the hint of plotlines can be found.
The characters?
Logen is supposed to be a great warrior but spends the first quarter of the book running from fights.
Captain Jezal is a dandy training for a duel. Everyone he runs into thinks he's a great swordfighter but his training shows he sucks. Does he have a bard hype-man running around town singing his praises or something? I don't understand the disconnect. Doesn't matter, he's more interested in blocking his sister's groove than his important duel anyway, and I could care less about either.
And fan-favorite, Glokta. A selfish, whining torturer who grumbles endlessly about walking and stairs. This is what people like to read? I wish I could make $$$ off of my complaining, but nobody seems to care.

I just don't know what I'm supposed to like - and I'm not reading three books in to get to a plot.

this book is equal parts hilarious and action packed and also incredibly boring. i only felt connections to some of the characters mainly logen, glokta, and bayaz, didn’t care for the others as much. it’s a lot of world building which i am used to but it just seems to drag on for soooooooooo long. i’m glad i finished it! if you like multiple character pov’s, world building, and action you’ll love this for sure! i did for the most part!pretty good banter between characters as well!

Oh, are you looking for something character-driven? COME OVER HERE. 3 main POV characters (for most of the book - more added gradually). You won't like all of them. You may not identify with any of them. But they're compelling as all heck.
And I'm a sucker for a book where everyone's all "psh, magic, of course nobody can do magic," and there's obviously a wizard RIGHT THERE.
And some of the blurbs made me think this would be all fight scenes, but they're actually quite rare. And no long LOTR-type battle scenes yet. And there's certainly no glorifying of violence.
So - on to #2!

I started it as an ebook and loved the story though noticed plot was slow. Though, despite it being slow the world building was amazing and I love the characters. I changed over to audiobook for my long commutes and I'm so glad I did. Hands down best audiobook ever. Steve Pacey is a phenomenal orator and gave a level of depth and life to this book that I couldn't have dreamed of.
