With the Shadow and Bone series releasing in April, I knew I had to get started on reading the trilogy. The first book takes place in the Ravka in which common soldiers and the powerful Grisha (more on that soon) risk their lives to cross the Shadow Fold, an area home to scary monsters. I found the storyline easy to follow and understand and unlike Six of Crows (a duology set in the same universe), I was more invested in the main characters.

While I know the series may not be for everyone, I really enjoyed the first installment. It follows a consistent narrative and I found the world to be oh-so-magical. Quickly, readers learn that Alina is more than just a common soldier and possesses powers that reveal her as a Grisha. *gasp* Alina’s story, which resembles many Russian-like aspects, is a wild ride and a perfect winter story.

I guess I liked it enough to read it all in one sitting, staying up until midnight to finish, but it didn’t really speak to me. It has my favorite trope (special kid in school), and I don’t think it did a great job of it, which was disappointing. A light, easy read. The characters were cute but wasn’t really invested in any of them (although I did like Mal)
