There are parts of the book that I felt could have been more explored, but overall I found this to be a fascinating and sobering read. Having a “contemporary” (1976) Black woman go back to 1815 Maryland made history more real to me. This book lingered with me and made me contemplate on the differences (and disgraceful similarities) of being Black in present and past America.

This is an important book to read- though it’s heavy and stressful.  Octavia doesn’t sugar coat the character’s experience with slavery.

Not usually my genre but found it fascinating and surprising easy to read. Really interesting commentary on how easily we accept atrocious situations.
