As a diaspora Malaysian a lot of this story was familiar to me - the xenophobia, the terrible conditions migrants face. This book is a piece of activism in how it’s written - I don’t know how one could not feel for migrants having read it. In that way it’s extremely compelling.

I’m not the biggest fan of the prose - but I generally don’t like books with a lot of conversation. If you don’t mind, pick it up.

A fascinating portrait of a poor rural Chinese Malay man, exploring in great depth complex issues surrounding globalisation and immigration. A particular focus is the informal hierarchies of immigrant groups - from the protagonist (a third-generation Hokkien Chinese immigrant who doesn't really feel himself to be a foreigner), to the Indonesians with work permits, to the Bangladeshis and Rohingyas that have endured dangerous journeys and harsh conditions in order to work for a pittance in the farms, factories and restaurants of Malaysia.
