"When faced with a door that's wide open, how many of us actually walk through it? We never take the chance to flee. We stay. We recognise the danger, but something in our brains tells us it isn't going to be so bad. We believe in life's power to iron out the kinks in our existence and make things turn out OK. We don't think anything fundamentally evil will occur to us. Everything will turn out just fine."

this novel is written like an interview, from the POV of an ex convict who used to work on a fish farm in malaysia, ah hock. he's interviewed by a younger woman who is visiting him a few times a week over 3 months where ah hock tells the story of his life and what led him to murder another man

what the book really is about is poverty, race, war, immigration, politics of southeast asia, etc. it paints a portrait of exploitation and poverty that is hard to stomach and very real

although this book surprised me in a couple ways some parts were a little long and a bit repetitive, but i still think it's an important story about a country that is not often talked about, where illegal immigrant workers live and work in the harshest conditions, basically slavery, to make palm oil and latex gloves

Far too much of a slow burn with not a lot happening... Didn't hold my interest.
