This was fun and the art is beautiful. However for me the story was a bit rushed and the magic system is still really hazy to me. I'm intrigued to continue with the story once the second volume is out.

Beautifully rendered and well written, a trip of magical discovery and family problems. Good stuff, and I would read more of this.

Wow! This is freaking brilliant!! I didn't expect to enjoy or love this comic this much, but hell, this is so fascinating. The magic system is so cool. They use gems to use magic! Gosh Amazing!! I love this so much!! And the artwork is so stunning!!!!!!!

I can't wait for vol.2 to come out now!!

This stuff's kind of dark and messed up, but there's colorful magic and I dig it. So many twists. The art is vibrant and beautiful and it feels like the artist is really enjoying drawing this comic (to the point of feeling kind of self-indulgent at times, but I don't begrudge them that).

And there was one bit that left me quite annoyed, namely, the part where Clint and Nina are discussing how she can use magic even though she's not a Paragon and stuff, and then a second later, they're kissing. Like, I knew that we were getting there from like the moment they meet, but that kiss felt way too out of place. It almost feels like they only kissed b/c the writer needed that to happen for the next plot point to make sense.

That being said, I still really enjoyed reading this. The pacing is fast and even, though at times it feels like Nina is just banging her head against the magical wall so to speak. But that also serves its own purpose - it creates a certain mood of misery and desperation, against the backdrop of gorgeous art. Nina's drug use (addiction?) also adds to that. And the world-building is great, I'm really enjoying learning it snippet-by-snippet without big info-dumps.

Thank you Edelweiss and Image Comics for the chance to read an e-advanced copy of Blackbird Volume 1.

I'd heard about this one late last year and was quite intrigued by both the art and the story. Magic hidden amidst the real world is always a feature that perks my interest, and the beautiful artwork of Jen Bartel really sold me. The story is a bit disjointed in some places, but for the most part, Nina and company (through Humphries and Bartel) have my attention. I'm very curious on where the story will go (also how long the story will be), especially given the turn of events in the final issue.

Also, bonus that Nina's familiar is a black cat, which is another plus in my book!

3.5/5

First things first; the art style was absolutely gorgeous. I am a sucker for bright vibrant colours and so I loved that. The actual plot was great and provided plenty of interesting elements whilst giving just enough answers to keep you intrigued without being too confused.
The main con is the way the dialogue was written and the clunky progressing of the plot. It felt at times like you were missing a few panels and the writing felt incredibly rushed. Every few panels I would break immersion due to the disjointed dialogue and progressing. I do hope if there are future volumes, that this element is improved as the world, characters and plot are fascinating, its just rough around the edges.

The artwork in this is stunning. I would say this is like a dark Sailor Moon story with some Hispanic sprinkles of abuelas, family drama, gangs and kickassery.

Damn, I was really hoping to love this since I'm a huge fan of Jen Bartel, but unfortunately... it's just alright. The drawings are beautiful and the colors are breathtaking, but every panel feels stiff and emotionless - Bartel's strength is beautiful pinups, not storytelling. As for the story, it's a somewhat original take on witch gangs in LA, but the pacing and writing leaves something to be desired.

Art was stunning, storyline/dialogue was a little disappointing.

This was just so damn beautiful visually. There’s a twist that I won’t spoil but it’s a trope that I’m not particularly fond of. I also didn’t buy the chemistry between the main character and the guy. Definitely not enough to be listed with a genre of romance on the back cover. Lots of inner dialogue which I generally don’t like, but makes sense for the story. Moved at a quick pace to the point it could feel rushed but there’s lots of revelations and surprises to get to. Besides the art being gorgeous the fashions are A+. Latina Representation for the MC & her sister.
