Blackbird, Vol. 1

the story is fun and the characters are great and it's v much exactly my thing but most importantly, every outfit in this is absolute fashion and that alone is worth 5 stars!

The art is out of this world! It's breathtaking and truly enhances everything about this story (which itself was a bit disjointed and lackluster). The romance in the first volume felt a bit forced, and I wish it didn't exist, but I'm not quite ready to write-off this story entirely. There's definitely some intrigue here, especially around the magic structure and organizations, and I'm interested to see where this goes.

3 for the art, 1.5 for the writing/plot/characters, averaging out to a 2.25. I did like the art (and coloring especially), but whoo boy everything else was a mess of nonsense.

Girls doing magical things and f*cking stuff up? Sign me up.

Whilst the art is vibrant and bright, the writing tends to be a little frenetic and unpolished, rushing exposition and backstory so the plot can advance. It's possible this is a problem only because this is the first volume, so I would be interested to see how the story moves along once we can focus more on the present.

It's worth mentioning that both the story and the art style remind me a lot The Wicked + The Divine, so I'm hoping that with a little time the storytelling will be able to flourish and shine in the same way.

Very strong first issue!

Blackbird is a story about Nina, who had predicted an earthquake when she was a teen, she saw a ghost/magic creature save her and her sister but everybody forgot it, expect for Nina. Ten years later, Nina is searching for magic and magic people while working deadend job in the bar, until one day things change.

The art is absolutely gorgeous, I love the character designs and the coloring, the panel composition is also excellent, I inhaled the issue in a breath, I'm looking forward to keeping up with this comic.

CW: drug addiction, parent's death

3.5 stars.
The actual prettiest art ever, plus the story is super interesting.

This is so hard to rate. The artwork? Stunning! Like maybe the most beautiful I’ve read. The plot? So cool, like out of this world awesome, I want more. The DIALOGUE seems like it was written by a child...one with no ambition to write. It was so juvenile and choppy ): I admit because of the things I loved about it, I’m picking the next volume up and praying for improvement. But damn, what a bummer.

TW: grief, loss of parent, drug addiction and car accident.
dark mysterious medium-paced

I am the world's biggest Jen Bartel fan, so having a whole book of her art was fantastic. I was less enamored with the story, but intrigued enough to want to read another volume.

Probably my favorite artwork of any graphic novel EVER. Love this volume and can’t wait to see the next one.
