The depictions of the many subtle and less subtle forms that racism, islamophobia and homophobia take within teenage friendships and a school environment felt so real and reminded me of my own behated secondary school (sale grammar school are a pack of asshats don't send your kids there). The way that students who try to speak up about the negative school environment or about bad behaviour by teachers or other students are targeted by teachers rang true to the descriptions from my friends who stayed at sgs for sixth form (I escaped).
Additionally, the depictions of complex and shifting family relationships felt very true to life. Overall a wonderful book.
