I didn’t quite know what I was in for when I started this book, but I guess it’s my fault for not checking too many reviews or synopses. It starts a little lighthearted, following a simple story of a truly unlikeable and quirky character, and then suddenly you turn a page and it’s trauma, trauma, trauma. Although I ultimately really enjoyed and appreciated this book, my main gripes came from the slow start and dialogue or situations that I found hard to believe. Setting aside the obvious that Eleanor has a tough time with social cues and suffers from PTSD (and although the author has outright said she doesn’t have autism, I think many readers and reviewers would identify her as such), some of the things she would say or situations she was in still seemed over-the-top or too unrealistic. At times she seemed more like a caricature of someone with mental illness rather than a real person.

Overall, this is one that I didn’t love until I finished it, which made the process of reading a bit tedious, but the end result rewarding. And, spoiler, Eleanor Oliphant really isn’t completely fine.

I enjoyed this book, so much darker than I anticipated and a definite slow burn. The ending was not what I expected - with two twists, one I guessed early on and the other that I still don’t understand! I agree with others comments about hating the crush part of the book, definitely one of the worst features. I’m also not a fan of the unexpected twist - it makes Eleanor’s therapeutic journey seem so much less powerful! I would have liked to have explored this more and also reflect on the autistic traits she shows (I am not a fan of authors disregarding this and saying it’s trauma, when this seems to go so much deeper). If it were to have a sequel, exploring how she managed to distance herself from her mother and a diagnosis of autism would have been really interesting! Unfortunately I can’t see any future writings as being anything more than a love story.

Slow beginning and middle. Slow character development. Gradual development between characters. Love the relationships developed.

This book was absolutely incredible. It made me feel so many things. I cannot even begin to express how much this book impacted me. It’s a story that I am so glad I read. It was heartbreaking and heartwarming all at once. Loneliness was a big theme in this book, yet reading it, I felt the opposite of alone. This story is one I’ll always remember and will forever be important to me.
